Is Invisalign® Right For Teens?

If your teen has misalignment and would benefit from orthodontic treatment, are metal braces the only option available? We may be able to help your child enjoy improved oral health without the use of braces. In today’s blog, we’re going to talk about how we help teenagers enjoy more even smiles in Fort Worth, TX, with our Invisalign® system.

Teens and Orthodontic Treatment

For teenagers with poor alignment, we will perform a thorough examination, incorporating advanced technology, to assess the cause and extent of their poor alignment and bite balance. We then have the information necessary to plan treatment and choose the most appropriate orthodontic system. Correcting misalignment means improving oral health, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease by essentially removing the places food particles can become trapped. Kids also have a reduced risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism, and misalignment will no longer place inordinate pressure on the jaw joints.

The Invisalign® System

For many teens, the Invisalign® system is an appropriate option, especially if they wore interceptive appliances and braces as a child. A set of aligners will be worn each day, for between 20 and 23 hours. After about two weeks, the patient will upgrade to the next set in the series. As smiles are still growing and changing, younger patients may need to wear them for up to 18 moths to see optimal results.

Starting Treatment

We will begin by taking detailed digital impression of the smile, and using the images we gather to create a 3D model, allowing us to design the aligners with precision and accuracy. In order to see optimal results in the original timeframe discussed with the dentist, our young patients must wear the aligners as prescribed every day. However, they can be removed occasionally. Teens can take them out before they eat, so they don’t have to worry about food becoming stuck in their smile, or about damage to orthodontics. Removal before brushing and flossing also makes caring for the smile much easier than it would be if they have metal braces. Finally, removing them for special occasions, such as a date or graduation, is okay as well.
