Fort Worth Orthodontist: FAQ Children and Braces

shutterstock_3386919More and more young children are seeing orthodontists. Straightened teeth are not just beneficial for one’s physical appearance; they may also allow an impacted tooth to come out of the jaw and prevent the need for later surgery. Straightened teeth also enhance speaking and chewing. Your Fort Worth orthodontist Dr. Cabal treats children of all ages. In today’s blog Dr. Cabal answers frequently asked questions about children’s orthodontics.

Q: When is the best time for my child to visit an orthodontist?

A: Your child’s family or pediatric dentist will suggest an orthodontic consultation when he notices problems. You may also call our office at any time with questions or concerns. Dr. Cabal provides interceptive care which is diagnosing and treating alignment issues early in a child’s development. Interceptive treatment occurs when the child’s jawbone is still developing which allows for greater repositioning and guidance. Dr. Cabal provides fixed and removable appliances to modify the jaw’s position and growth so that all teeth will possess enough space to erupt. This could prevent the need for more complex treatments when the child is older.

Q: Will I be able to tell if my child needs her teeth straightened?

A: Permanent teeth begin to shift and grow crooked between ages six and nine. The most common teeth to deviate are the front teeth and the back teeth because these are the largest teeth and need more space than others. If you have any questions, Dr. Cabal offers a complimentary consultation for new patients.

Q: What can I expect at my child’s initial consultation with Dr. Cabal?

A: At your child’s complimentary consultation, Dr. Cabal will study your child’s records and share his opinion. Dr. Cabal and his team work under the philosophy that prevention is best. Children who receive interceptive care, also known as Phase I treatment, will generally need Phase II treatment which is braces on the permanent teeth. However, children that received interceptive orthodontics typically require shorter and less comprehensive Phase II braces.
