Frequently Asked Questions About TMJ Therapy in Fort Worth, TX

Question: What causes TMJ Disorder?

Answer: The disorder develops when the jaw joints undergo excessive amounts of stress. When this occurs, patients may experience discomfort when eating or speaking. Common causes of strain include injury, malocclusion, tooth loss, or bruxism (teeth grinding/clenching).

Question: Do I need treatment?

Answer: If you experience one or more of the common symptoms then you may benefit from treatment. Common warning signs include headaches, jaw pain, facial discomfort, neck/shoulder aches, earaches, popping or clicking in the jaw, or tooth sensitivity/aches.

Question: What is TMJ Therapy?

Answer: With TMJ Therapy we use oral splints to ease symptoms. Similar in appearance to a nightguard, the device is worn during sleep. The appliance repositions the jaw, relieving strain and reducing symptoms. In addition, you may need to perform simple muscle exercises a few times daily or apply a warm compress to the side of the face to ease tension. We also suggest avoiding hard or chewy foods, as the repetitive actions needed to eat the food can exacerbate symptoms.

Question: Will orthodontics help?

Answer: In many cases, misalignment can place stress on the jaw joints. Correcting alignment issues with orthodontic treatment can often reduce symptoms of both TMD and bruxism. If you have any questions, please contact our office today for more information or a diagnosis. We can ease the discomfort related to TMD issues.
